If you wish to experience an authentic taste of lake Orta following an unusual itinerary far from the tourist crowds and if you like walking, this could be a perfect tour for you.
Our walk will start from the village of Orta San Giulio on the way to Legro, a hamlet which is part of Orta, better known as "the Painted Village" due to the fact that many houses there have an external wall decorated with painted scenes from films shot on lake Orta especially in 1970s.
Legro's heart houses a pretty little church consacrated to St. Alexandra. We will then continue our walk uphill passing local houses and fields before we get to the nice little village of Vacciago, where we will walk through elegant old houses and buildings and we will discover the old church of St. Antonio.
We will then leave Vacciago walking down to the gorgeous hamlet of Corconio, known as the baroque part of Orta San Giulio, where we find the beautiful villa Bonola as well as the the tiny baroque church of Santo Stefano - St. Stephen - an architectural jewel that was erected in the 17th century.
Corconio, in a clear day, offers superb views of Mount Rosa (15 200 feet high), an imposing peak of the Alps which hides behind lake Orta.
ITINERARY
We will meet in Orta San Giulio and we will start our walk uphill towards Legro. Then we will continue our walk on the way to Vacciago first and then Corconio before walking back to Orta San Giulio
